How to Get Shorter, Clearer Answers from AI

Hello, friend, Pip here. If AI ever hands you a wall of text when you just wanted a quick answer, you're not alone. The good news is you're holding the remote. A few small words from you can turn a rambling reply into something short and clear.

Think of it like asking someone for the time. You want "quarter past three," not the full history of how clocks were invented. AI tends to over-explain because it's trying to be helpful, so your job is simply to tell it how much you actually need.

The phrases that trim the fat

Start your request with a size. "In one sentence," "in three bullet points," or "give me the short version" all work like a charm. You can be even firmer: "Just the answer, no explanation," or "Reply in under 50 words." The AI will happily follow your lead.

If a reply comes back too long, you don't have to start over. Just say "shorter," "cut that in half," or "give me only the most important part." You can also ask it to put the answer first: "Tell me yes or no first, then explain briefly if you must." That way you get what you need up top and can stop reading whenever you like.

One more gentle tip: ask for a format that's easy to scan. "Give me a quick checklist" or "list the three steps" turns a paragraph into something you can act on at a glance. Short isn't just faster, it's often clearer, because the AI has to pick the one thing that truly matters.

So next time the answers feel too big, remember you set the size. Ask for less, and you'll usually understand more. Come practice these with me anytime, I'm always glad for the company.
