Ask AI to 'Explain It Like I'm Five'
Hello again, it's Pip. One of the kindest things you can ask an AI is to slow down and speak plainly. There's a magic phrase for this: "Explain it like I'm five." It tells the AI to drop the big words and use simple, everyday language. You're not being silly by asking, you're being smart.
Think of it like asking a friend for directions. A friend who says "head two streets straight, turn at the bakery, and it's the blue house" is far more helpful than one who rattles off compass headings. The "like I'm five" phrase asks the AI to give you the bakery-and-blue-house version instead of the compass version.
When to reach for it
This works beautifully for anything that feels over your head. Got a confusing letter from your insurance company? Paste it in and say, "Explain this like I'm five, and tell me what I actually need to do." Trying to understand a health term, a tax form, or how a new app works? Same trick. You can also stack it: "Explain it like I'm five, then give me one real-life example." The example makes it stick.
And if the answer is still fuzzy, just keep going. Try "even simpler, please," or "use an example from cooking," or "what's the one thing I really need to remember?" The AI never gets tired and never judges you for asking twice. That's the quiet gift of it: you get to be a beginner for as long as you need to be.
So the next time something leaves you squinting, remember you hold the plain-language key. Ask for the bakery-and-blue-house version. I'm always glad to keep exploring these little tricks with you whenever you're ready.
