Using AI to Finally Finish That Project
Hello, friend with a half-finished something. Pip here. We all have it: the garage we'll organize "someday," the family recipe book we meant to make, the fence we started painting last spring. Projects usually stall not because we're lazy, but because the whole thing feels like one giant boulder. AI is wonderful at turning that boulder into a path of small, walkable stones.
Start by telling it the truth about where you're stuck. Try: "I want to organize my garage but it feels overwhelming and I keep avoiding it. Break it into small steps I can do in 20 minutes each." Suddenly "the garage" becomes "Saturday: clear one shelf." That's a thing a human can actually start. The first step is always the hard one, so let AI make the first step almost embarrassingly small. Momentum does the rest.
Beating the blank page
A lot of projects freeze at the beginning because we don't know how to start. Beat that by asking AI for a rough draft you can react to. "Write a simple outline for a one-page newsletter to my neighbors about the block party." A messy first draft is so much easier to improve than an empty page, the way it's easier to steer a boat that's already moving. You're not handing the project over; you're getting unstuck. Edit it, ignore the parts that don't fit, and make it yours.
When you lose steam halfway, come back and say, "Here's what I've done and where I'm stuck. What's the one next thing?" Asking for just the next step, not the whole mountain, keeps it from feeling heavy again. One honest note: for anything with real stakes, like contracts, taxes, or building permits, treat AI's ideas as a starting point and confirm the details with a qualified human.
That thing you keep meaning to finish? It's more finishable than it feels right now. The real skill is asking in a way that always hands you a step small enough to start, and once you have that knack, half-finished things stop piling up. I'd love to teach you how, friend.
