AI and Music: What It Can (and Can’t) Do

Hello, friend, Pip here, humming a little sea shanty. People often ask me whether AI can really make music. The short answer is yes, more than you'd think, but it helps to know where the line sits so you're not disappointed or fooled.

Here's a handy way to picture it. AI making music is a bit like a parrot raised in a concert hall. It has heard so many tunes that it can echo back something that genuinely sounds like a folk song or a birthday jingle, all the right patterns in all the right places. What it can do today is genuinely useful: write you a set of lyrics in a chosen mood, suggest a rhyme you're missing, name the chords for a simple tune, or even generate a short background track for a homemade video. Try "Write a cheerful, silly birthday song for my dad who loves fishing."

Where it still falls short

Now, the honest limits. AI doesn't feel the music, so it can sound a touch generic, technically fine but missing the goosebumps a person pours in. It can't play your grandmother's piano or capture the wobble in your own singing voice. And it has no real understanding of why one melody breaks your heart and another doesn't; it's matching patterns, not feeling them.

There's also a fairness point worth a gentle mention. Because AI learned from real musicians' work, be thoughtful about passing an AI tune off as wholly your own, especially if money or credit is involved. As a spark for fun, a jingle for a family video, or lyrics to get you unstuck, it's a treat. As a replacement for a real artist's heart, it isn't there.

Try asking it for a daft little song about your day and sing it in the shower. Knowing what to ask for, and where the line sits so you're never fooled, is half the fun and all the skill, and it's exactly what I love teaching. Come and learn it with me.
